“The paper swimmer. The cheapest and most wonderful toy ever invented. Price one cent. For sale here.”
Here’s an amazing 19th century collection of printed ephemera, photos and drawings related to the paper swimmer. I’m assuming this material was used to file for a patent.
In the photos are Joseph S. Rich and Jacob S. Rich. I do believe the older brother was the brains behind this absolutely *genius* toy. I can’t imagine it would do much more than get soggy and sink? At least it was cheap.
Also included are three drawings of other inventions including the improvement in drop light socket, printers card gauge and the hand power screw propeller.
For scale, the yellow envelopes are 9.5” x 4”.
